Italian unions stage anti-government protest ‎

On Friday, in Rome, about 25,000 labor demonstrators staged a new antigovernment protest called by the three Italian major unions.

This time the Monti-led government was under fire for its pension system reform.

Starting from January 2012, pensions above 936 euros a month will not be raised in line with inflation and the retirement age has gone up from 60 to 62 for women and from 65 to 66 for men.

The demonstrators, who came from across the country, were mostly made up by the so-called “esodati”, which is the term used in Italy to indicate ex-employees who accepted severance packages ahead of retirement to help companies downsize but who have not received their benefits yet. Moreover, they are ineligible to receive a pension as they chose to quit before the minimum retirement age which - as said earlier - has recently been raised.

According to the government there are approximately 65,000 “esodati”, whilst the unions have estimated that the actual number is over 300,000.

Italy's economy is likely to contract 1.6 percent during the first quarter of the year, the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has recently said. The atmosphere in the country is gloomy and there is no sign the economy is going to pick up its pace any soon.

Even the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has urged the government to focus on growth measures as the economic figures are extremely worrying.

Prime Minister Monti’s personal rating is dropping and an increasing number of people are saying the country is on the wrong track.

Most Italians are starting to think that the transition from Berlusconi to Monti has been like a jump from the frying pan into the fire.

Venerdì scorso, a Roma, circa 25.000 manifestanti del lavoro hanno inscenato una nuova protesta antigovernativa indetta dai tre principali sindacati italiani.

 Questa volta il governo guidato da Monti era sotto il fuoco per la sua riforma del sistema pensionistico.

A partire dal gennaio 2012, le pensioni superiori a 936 euro al mese non verrà generato in linea con l'inflazione e l'età pensionabile è salito da 60 a 62 per le donne e da 65 a 66 per gli uomini.

I manifestanti, provenienti da tutto il paese, erano per lo più costituita dalla cosiddetta "esodati", che è il termine usato in Italia per indicare gli ex-dipendenti che hanno accettato i pacchetti di fine prima del pensionamento per aiutare le aziende a ridimensionare, ma che non hanno ancora ricevuto i loro benefici. Inoltre, sono ammissibili a ricevere una pensione che hanno scelto di uscire prima dell'età minima di pensionamento, che - come detto in precedenza - è stato recentemente sollevato.

Secondo il governo ci sono circa 65.000 "esodati", mentre i sindacati hanno stimato che il numero reale è oltre 300.000.

Anche il Presidente della Repubblica Italiana Giorgio Napolitano ha sollecitato il governo a concentrarsi su misure per la crescita, come i dati economici sono estremamente preoccupanti.

La valutazione personale del primo ministro Monti è in calo e un numero crescente di persone stanno dicendo che il paese è sulla strada sbagliata.
